Levels

Two-level horizontal stretch that splits linebacker zones

horizontal stretchtwo-levelzone-beater

Levels places two receivers on the same side of the field at different depths — typically a dig or in route at 12-15 yards and a shallow cross at 5-6 yards. This creates a horizontal and vertical stretch on the underneath zone defenders, forcing them to choose a level while leaving the other open. The Levels concept is a foundational zone-beater in the West Coast offense and remains a primary call against Cover 3 and Tampa 2 defenses. Coaches love it for its simplicity, reliability, and adaptability to almost any formation or personnel grouping.

Route Assignments

HdigCore

Dig route at 12 yards — the high level of the two-level stretch sitting over the linebackers.

Yshallow crossCore

Shallow cross at 5 yards — the low level running underneath the dig to split the linebackers.

Xgo

Go route clearing the deep defender on the concept side to open up the dig window.

Zout

Out route to the boundary giving the QB an outlet away from the concept if coverage rotates.

Fblock

Running back stays in to pass protect, giving the QB time for the dig to develop.

Read Progression

Read the hook-to-curl defender: if he drops with the dig, throw the shallow cross underneath. If he sits on the shallow, throw the dig over the top. Check the out route or flat if the concept is covered.

Why It Works

Underneath zone defenders are responsible for a range of depths. By placing two receivers at different levels in the same zone, the concept creates an impossible coverage assignment. The defender cannot cover both the dig and the shallow simultaneously, so one is always open.
