Scissors

Post-corner combination that crosses receiver paths

deep-shothigh-lowcrossing-paths

Scissors is a deep-shot concept where two receivers cross paths — the outside receiver runs a post while the inside receiver runs a corner. The crossing action confuses pattern-matching defenses and creates a high-low stretch on the deep defenders. Originally developed as a Cover 2 beater to attack the void between the deep safeties and the corner defender, Scissors has evolved into a versatile concept that stresses any two-deep or quarters coverage. It requires a strong-armed quarterback and precise route-running but generates explosive plays when executed properly.

Route Assignments

ZpostCore

Post route from the outside breaking across the field — attacks the deep middle void.

YcornerCore

Corner route from inside breaking outside — crosses under the post and attacks the sideline.

Xdig

Dig route underneath the scissors combination providing an intermediate option.

Hflat

Flat route to the boundary giving the QB a short option if coverage blankets the deep routes.

Fblock

Running back stays in to max protect, buying time for the deep routes to develop.

Read Progression

Read the deep safety to the concept side: if he stays over the top of the post, throw the corner behind him. If he widens with the corner, throw the post into the vacated middle. Come down to the dig or flat if the deep routes are covered.

Why It Works

The crossing paths of the post and corner create confusion for both zone and pattern-matching defenders. The deep safety cannot cover both routes because they diverge in opposite directions after the intersection point, guaranteeing one receiver runs free.
