Cover 1 Double

1 Deep, Double on #1, 3 Man

Cover 1 Double commits two defenders to the offense's most dangerous receiver — the CB plays outside leverage while the SS drops inside to bracket him. The FS stays deep as the single-high safety, and the remaining defenders play man-to-man. This is a calculated gamble: the defense eliminates the opponent's best weapon but leaves another receiver in single coverage without safety help. It is a red-zone and critical-down call, deployed when a single receiver is dominating the game.

Defender Responsibilities

CornerbackDouble on #1 (Outside)

Primary bracket defender with outside leverage on the opponent's #1 receiver. Takes away the fade, out, and comeback routes. Forces the receiver inside toward the SS bracket. Press technique at the line to disrupt timing.

CornerbackMan on #1 (Isolated)

Single man coverage on the opposite #1 receiver with FS help over the top. The calculated risk — this CB must win his matchup because the SS is committed to the double on the other side.

Free SafetyDeep Middle (Centerfield)

Single-high safety playing centerfield. Shades slightly toward the non-doubled side to provide help for the isolated CB. Must not get drawn toward the double side — that receiver is already accounted for. Reads the QB's eyes and breaks on deep throws.

Strong SafetyDouble on #1 (Inside)

Inside bracket on the opponent's #1 receiver. Plays at 8-12 yards depth with inside leverage, walling off slants, digs, and crossers. Works in tandem with the CB — together they take away every route in the receiver's tree.

Will LinebackerMan on RB

Man on the RB out of the backfield. With the SS committed to the double, the WILL must handle the back without safety help. Athletic backs creating mismatches are the primary concern.

Mike LinebackerMan on TE / #3

Man on the TE or #3 receiver. No safety help — the FS shades to the non-doubled side and the SS is in the bracket. The MIKE must win his matchup in space.

Sam LinebackerMan on #2 / TE

Man on the #2 receiver or strong-side TE. With resources committed to the double, the SAM picks up an additional coverage responsibility and must handle it without help.

Vulnerabilities

  • !! Isolated CB on #1 opposite side
  • !! #2/#3 receivers vs LB mismatches
  • ! Run game with SS committed to bracket
  • ! Quick game to the non-doubled side

Best Attacks

Attack the isolated CB on the non-doubled side with fades and back-shoulders, target #2 and #3 receivers against LB mismatches, and run the ball to exploit the SS being removed from run support.
