Cover 1 Rat

1 Deep, 4 Man, 1 Rat, 1 Blitz

Cover 1 Rat modifies standard Cover 1 by designating a linebacker — usually the WILL or SAM — as a 'rat' defender who sits in the underneath zone at 8-10 yards, reading the QB's eyes and jumping any intermediate throw. Instead of blitzing or taking a man, the rat plays a robber-style zone in the middle of the field. The FS stays deep as the single-high safety, four defenders play man, and a fifth defender (typically a LB or DB) blitzes. The rat is the wrinkle — offenses expect man coverage with pressure, but the rat takes away the easy crosser or in-cut that would normally beat man coverage.

Defender Responsibilities

CornerbackMan on #1

Man coverage on #1 with FS help over the top. Plays standard Cover 1 technique — inside leverage, knowing the deep safety is behind him. The rat defender does not help the CBs; his zone is interior underneath.

CornerbackMan on #1

Mirror man coverage. The rat sits underneath in the middle, so the CBs must handle their assignments outside without expecting help in the flat or curl zones.

Free SafetyDeep Middle (Centerfield)

Plays centerfield 15-18 yards deep. Same role as standard Cover 1 — reads the QB's eyes and breaks on the deep throw. The FS is the last line of defense if a CB gets beat deep.

Strong SafetyMan on TE / #2

Takes a man assignment on the TE or #2 receiver. In some versions, the SS mans the TE while the rat defender roams free underneath. Must win his 1-on-1 matchup without help from the rat, who is reading the QB rather than bracketing.

Will LinebackerRat Zone (8-10 yds)

The rat. Drops to 8-10 yards in the middle of the field and reads the QB's eyes. Does not have a man assignment — instead, he looks to jump any intermediate throw, especially crossers, digs, and in-cuts. The rat turns the middle of the field into a trap. Must be disciplined enough to not chase one route and open a lane behind him.

Mike LinebackerMan on RB / #3

Man on the RB or #3 receiver. With the WILL playing rat, the MIKE must handle the man assignment the WILL would normally take. Must be athletic enough to match a back in space.

Sam LinebackerBlitz

Blitzes from the strong side. With the rat taking away a man coverage defender, the defense sends a fifth rusher to maintain pressure. The blitz and the rat work together — pressure forces the QB into quick throws, and the rat sits on those throws.

Vulnerabilities

  • !! Outside fade routes (rat is interior only)
  • !! Deep shots away from the FS
  • ! Flat routes with no flat defender
  • ! Bunch/pick concepts vs man

Best Attacks

Outside fades and back-shoulder throws that the rat cannot help on, flat routes with no underneath zone defender, deep sideline shots away from the FS, and bunch formations that create rub routes vs man.
