Cover 3 Buzz
3 Deep, 4 Under (LB to Flat)
Cover 3 Buzz sends a linebacker (typically the SAM or nickel defender) to the strong flat instead of the safety. 'Buzz' means linebacker to the flat. The SS stays deep or rotates to a half-field alignment, providing extra depth and range. This sacrifices the aggressive run-support that Sky provides but keeps both safeties in deeper positions, making the defense more resistant to play-action and deep shots. Buzz is favored against passing teams where the defense wants safeties in coverage rather than in the box.
Defender Responsibilities
Bails at the snap and takes the deep left third. Standard Cover 3 technique — outside leverage on #1, protects the deep ball. Gives up underneath throws.
Mirror technique on the deep right third. With the SS staying deeper in Buzz, the CB has more safety help on deep routes than in Sky.
Plays the deep middle third at 15+ yards. Same responsibility as standard Cover 3. With the SS also deep, the middle of the field is better protected against play-action deep shots.
Stays at safety depth instead of rolling down to the flat. May play a deep half or rotate to a hash landmark. This keeps the SS available for pass coverage and reduces the defense's exposure to play-action and deep shots. Less effective in run support than Sky.
Drops to the weak-side hook or curl zone. Standard underneath zone technique — reads the QB, walls crossers, and fills vs the run.
Anchors the middle hook zone. With a LB taking the flat, the MIKE still has his standard hook zone responsibility. Must handle crossers and dig routes through the middle.
The buzz player. Expands to the strong flat at the snap, replacing the SS as the flat defender. Walls #2 to the flat and is the force player on outside runs. Less athletic than a safety in this role, but keeps the SS deep. 'Buzz' = linebacker to the flat.
Vulnerabilities
- !! Flat routes vs slower LB (SAM in flat)
- !! Curl/out soft spots with only 4 under
- ! Outside run game without SS as force
- ! Quick game to the strong flat
- ! Seam routes between CB and FS thirds
Best Attacks
Quick throws to the flat attacking the LB who is less athletic than a safety, flood concepts against 4 underneath, and outside runs that exploit the lack of a safety in the force role.
