Cover 4

4 Deep, 3 Under

Cover 4 (Quarters) assigns each of the four deep defenders — two corners and two safeties — a quarter of the deep field. The three remaining underneath defenders handle short zones. It's the most conservative pass coverage, designed to prevent the big play. The weakness: only three underneath defenders, and the seams between the quarters can be attacked by well-designed route combinations.

Defender Responsibilities

CornerbackDeep Quarter (Outside)

Owns the deep outside quarter. Plays with outside leverage. Keys the #1 receiver — if #1 goes vertical, carries him all the way. If #1 goes short/underneath, the CB can squeeze down and help on #2 or look for work inside. Pattern-matches off #1's route.

CornerbackDeep Quarter (Outside)

Mirror on the opposite side. In quarters, the CBs play more like safeties — they're deep defenders first. They give up underneath throws freely to protect the deep ball.

Free SafetyDeep Quarter (Inside Left)

Owns the inside-left quarter (between the left hash and the middle). Keys the #2 receiver — if #2 goes vertical, carries him. If #2 goes short, the FS can rob underneath. The seam between the FS and SS quarters is the vulnerability.

Strong SafetyDeep Quarter (Inside Right)

Owns the inside-right quarter. Mirror of the FS. The seam between them is where post routes from the slot live. Both safeties must communicate who has a vertical #2.

Will LinebackerWeak Hook / Underneath

One of only three underneath defenders. Covers a huge amount of ground in the short zones. Must be able to rally to the flat, cover the hook zone, and match any crosser coming through his area.

Mike LinebackerMiddle Hook

Anchors the middle underneath. With only 3 under, the MIKE's zone is enormous. He can be stretched easily by levels concepts or high-low combinations.

Sam LinebackerStrong Curl / Underneath

Strong-side underneath. Same challenge as the WILL — too much ground with only 3 underneath defenders. Flood concepts and rub routes in the short zones stress all three LBs.
