Palms / Clamp

Adaptive Match on #2 Receiver

Palms (called 'Clamp' in Saban's system) is an adaptive match concept that shifts the cornerback's key read from the #1 receiver to the #2 receiver. The CB and safety to each side operate as a tandem: if #2 goes vertical, the CB stays on #1 and the safety takes #2. If #2 runs flat or out, the CB jumps off #1 to cover #2 and the safety rolls to cover #1. If #2 goes inside, the CB stays on top of #1. This creates a self-adjusting coverage that reacts to the route distribution rather than locking into a predetermined assignment.

Defender Responsibilities

CornerbackKey #2 / Match #1 or #2

Keys #2 in peripheral vision while aligning on #1. If #2 goes vertical: stays on #1 (safety takes #2). If #2 goes flat/out: jumps to cover #2, safety rolls to #1. If #2 goes inside: stays on top of #1. The read happens in the first two steps — hesitation kills the coverage.

CornerbackKey #2 / Match #1 or #2

Mirror Palms technique. Each side of the field operates independently — the CB-safety tandem reads #2's release and reacts accordingly. The coverage is self-correcting against most 2-receiver route combinations.

Free SafetyMatch #2 Vert / #1 if CB Jumps

Reads #2 to his side. If #2 goes vertical, the FS takes him deep. If #2 goes short (triggering the CB to jump), the FS rolls to cover #1 over the top. The safety's depth must be calibrated — too deep and the flat throw is easy, too shallow and a vertical #2 gets behind him.

Strong SafetyMatch #2 Vert / #1 if CB Jumps

Mirror of the FS on the strong side. The CB-safety exchange must be seamless — any hesitation creates a window. Pre-snap alignment in a two-high shell disguises whether the defense is playing Palms, quarters, or Cover 2.

Will LinebackerHook / Match #3

Plays the hook zone or pattern-matches #3 weak. In Palms, the LBs handle the interior receivers and any threats through the middle. The WILL must be alert for crossers from the opposite side.

Mike LinebackerMiddle Hook / Match #3

Anchors the middle. Keys #3 (TE/RB) and pattern-matches based on the release. The MIKE is the conflict player when #3 releases to the flat — does he follow or stay in the hook zone? Game-plan rules dictate the answer.

Sam LinebackerCurl / Match #3

Strong-side curl zone or matches #3 strong. In the Palms structure, the LBs play their zones aggressively because the CB-safety tandems handle the outside receivers. Must rally to the flat if #2 releases there and the CB does not jump.

Vulnerabilities

  • !! Comeback route behind CB who jumped to flat
  • !! CB hesitation on the #2 read
  • !! Trips formations overloading one side
  • ! Deep posts when safety rolls to #1
  • ! Quick game before reads develop

Best Attacks

Comeback routes behind the CB who jumped to the flat, deep posts when the safety rolls down to cover #1, trips formations that overload one CB-safety tandem, and quick-game concepts that attack before the Palms reads develop.
