Tampa 2

3 Deep (MLB Drops), 4 Under

Tampa 2 modifies traditional Cover 2 by having the middle linebacker sprint to the deep middle hole between the two safeties, effectively creating a three-deep shell. The MLB's 'tempo drop' is conditional — he only commits to the deep sprint if a receiver threatens the middle seam. This transforms Cover 2's most critical vulnerability (the deep middle) into a strength, but demands an elite athlete at MLB who can read, react, and cover 25+ yards of depth.

Defender Responsibilities

CornerbackFlat / Curl-Flat

Same technique as Cover 2 — jams #1 at the line, funnels inside, sinks to the flat. The MLB dropping deep means the underneath zones are now split among only four defenders, stretching the curl-flat windows wider.

CornerbackFlat / Curl-Flat

Mirror technique. The CB's jam is even more critical in Tampa 2 because with only 4 underneath defenders, a free release by #1 puts enormous stress on the flat zone and the safety's deep half.

Free SafetyDeep Half (Left)

Plays deep left half, 12-15 yards deep. With the MLB dropping into the middle, the FS can shade slightly wider toward the sideline, improving his ability to cover corner routes and deep outs that traditionally beat Cover 2.

Strong SafetyDeep Half (Right)

Plays deep right half. Mirror of FS. The three-deep structure (FS, MLB, SS) eliminates the traditional Cover 2 weakness but requires trust that the MLB will get to his spot in time.

Will LinebackerWeak Hook / Curl

Drops to weak-side hook-curl zone. With the MIKE vacating the middle to drop deep, the WILL must expand his coverage to help fill the void in the middle of the field at 8-12 yards.

Mike LinebackerDeep Middle (Tempo Drop)

The heart of Tampa 2. Reads #2 receivers at the snap — if either threatens the middle seam, the MIKE turns and sprints to 20-25 yards deep. If no vertical threat materializes, he stays in the hook zone. Requires a 4.5-speed linebacker with safety instincts. Derrick Brooks and Brian Urlacher were the prototypes.

Sam LinebackerStrong Hook / Curl

Strong-side hook-curl zone. Must expand coverage to compensate for the MIKE vacating the middle. Athletic TEs attacking the seam create a conflict — is it the MIKE's deep drop or the SAM's underneath responsibility?

Vulnerabilities

  • !! Only 4 underneath — floods and crossers
  • !! Hole shot if MLB is late on tempo drop
  • !! Spread offenses stretching the 4 under
  • ! Athletic TEs in the seam (MIKE conflict)
  • ! RPOs exploiting the MLB's deep drop read

Best Attacks

Flood concepts against only 4 underneath, crossing routes through the vacated middle, athletic TEs threatening the seam to conflict the MLB, and RPOs that punish the MIKE for dropping deep.
