3-4 Two-Gap

Read-and-react, two-gap discipline

The 3-4 Two-Gap front asks its three down linemen to control two gaps each, occupying blockers and keeping linebackers free to flow to the football. It is a read-and-react scheme that prioritizes gap discipline over penetration. The nose tackle is the anchor, aligned head-up on the center in a 0-technique, responsible for both A-gaps. This front requires enormous, powerful defensive linemen who can hold the point of attack.

Player Assignments

Defensive End (Weak)5-tech (C/B gap (weak))

Two-gaps the offensive tackle. Must read the tackle's block and control both the B- and C-gaps on the weak side. Denies outside runs and squeezes inside runs.

Nose Tackle (0-tech)0-tech (A gap (both))

The most important player in the front. Aligns head-up on the center and must control both A-gaps. Demands a 320+ pound anchor who can hold the point of attack against double teams.

Defensive End (Strong)5-tech (C/B gap (strong))

Mirrors the weak-side DE with two-gap responsibilities against the strong-side tackle. Must be stout enough to set the edge while controlling the B-gap.

Weak-side OLB7/9-tech (weak) (D gap / contain (weak))

Weak-side edge setter and pass rusher. Responsible for outside contain on runs and must be able to rush the passer when called upon. More of a hybrid edge player than a traditional linebacker.

Strong-side OLB7/9-tech (strong) (D gap / contain (strong))

Strong-side edge player. Takes on the tight end or offensive tackle, setting the edge on runs and rushing the passer on passing downs.

Inside Linebacker (MIKE)Stack (strong A) (A gap (strong))

Free to read and react because the DL are eating blocks. Fills the strong A-gap on downhill runs and covers the middle hook zone in pass coverage.

Inside Linebacker (WILL)Stack (weak A) (A gap (weak))

Mirrors the MIKE on the weak side. Flows to the ball behind the DL screen. Must be a sure tackler and capable of matching backs in coverage.

Strengths

  • Keeps all four linebackers clean to flow and make tackles
  • Extremely sound against the run with disciplined gap control
  • Difficult for offenses to reach the second level with combo blocks
  • Versatile blitz packages from any of the four linebackers

Weaknesses

  • Requires rare, massive defensive linemen who can two-gap effectively
  • Passive approach generates minimal interior pass rush without blitzing
  • Can be exploited by quick passing games that attack before pressure arrives
  • Nose tackle is the single point of failure; if he gets moved, the front collapses
