Spacing
Five receivers flooding the underneath level
Five receivers distribute across one horizontal level at 5-6 yards, each spaced 6-8 yards apart. Bill Walsh codified this West Coast Offense staple. Against Cover 3 (4 underneath) or Cover 4 (3 underneath), there are only 3-4 defenders responsible for the entire width — the offense has a guaranteed numbers advantage. Sean Payton called spacing "the second read to everything." It yields high-percentage completions but primarily short gains of 5-8 yards.
Route Assignments
Quick out route at 5 yards to the left sideline.
Hitch at 5 yards — sits in the void between underneath defenders.
Sit route at 5 yards in the middle of the field — the primary read against zone.
Hitch at 6 yards on the right side.
Check-down to the flat — safety valve if all spacing windows are covered.
Read Progression
Scan across the underneath level — find the void between zone defenders and throw to the receiver sitting in it. Against man, look for the receiver with the most separation.
Why It Works
Five receivers across one level creates a guaranteed numbers advantage against any zone with 3-4 underneath defenders. The defenders cannot cover 5 receivers across the entire width. The offense finds the void and delivers.
