Heavy
Three Tight Ends, Wing Left
13 Personnel (1 RB, 3 TE, 1 WR)
Heavy has three tight ends: one on each end of the line and a third on the wing outside the left one, with a single receiver off the ball to the right and one back behind the quarterback. It adds a blocker at the point of attack for short yardage and the goal line. The wing can block down, kick out the edge defender or slip into a route off play-action, and a defense that matches with bigger personnel has fewer cover players on the field.
Strengths4
- Strength: An extra blocker at the point of attack for short yardage and the goal line
- Strength: The wing can block down, kick out the edge or release on play-action
- Strength: Makes a lighter defense pay on the ground
- Strength: Play-action and bootlegs leave tight ends open as the defense crowds the line
Weaknesses3
- Weakness: One receiver split, so the defense can bring an eighth or ninth defender into the box
- Weakness: Few quick passes that beat tight man coverage
- Weakness: Tight splits let the defense squeeze the run lanes
