Dagger

Seam-and-dig combo that dissects Cover 2

high-lowcover-2-beaterseam-based

Dagger is a precision Cover 2 killer designed to exploit the void between the two deep safeties. A tight end or slot receiver pushes a seam route deep between the safeties while an outside receiver runs a dig underneath, creating a high-low read on the safety forced to choose between the two. The concept gained widespread popularity in the West Coast offense and remains a go-to call whenever coordinators identify a Cover 2 shell pre-snap. It pairs beautifully with play-action to widen the seam window.

Route Assignments

X, goCore

Clear-out vertical up the sideline that bait-pulls the deep safety wide so the dig has open grass underneath.

H, digCore

Dig route at 12 yards crossing under the clear-out vertical, the primary throw in the high-low.

Y, curl

Curl route at the first-down sticks providing a safe intermediate option.

Z, go

Go route to clear out the boundary corner and occupy the deep safety.

F, flat

Running back leaks to the flat as a check-down after faking pass protection.

Read Progression

Read the deep safety. If he stays wide, throw the seam. If he squeezes the seam, hit the dig underneath. Check the curl and flat if both are covered.

Why It Works

Cover 2 only has two deep defenders responsible for three deep zones. The seam route attacks the middle of the field where neither safety has primary responsibility, and the dig gives the QB an easy throw if the safety jumps the seam.
