Cover 6
Mixed — 2 Deep (one side) / 4 Deep (other side)
Cover 6 is a split-coverage scheme: one side of the field plays Cover 4 (quarters) and the other plays Cover 2. This lets the defense adjust to offensive formations — the quarters side typically faces the passing strength while the Cover 2 side handles the weak side. It's a chess move that gives the defense flexibility, but it also creates an asymmetry that can be exploited if the offense identifies which side is playing which coverage.
Defender Responsibilities
Plays quarters technique — keys #1, carries vertical, pattern-matches off the route. Has safety help inside from the FS who's playing the inside quarter.
Plays Cover 2 technique — jams #1, funnels inside, sinks to the flat. Does NOT have deep responsibility. The SS takes the deep half behind him.
Plays the inside quarter on the quarters side. Keys #2 — carries vertical, robs underneath if #2 goes short. He's paired with the quarters CB to cover half the deep field in two pieces.
Plays the deep half on the Cover 2 side — all the way from the hash to the sideline. He's essentially covering the same area as an entire safety in standard Cover 2, but the other half of the field has quarters coverage.
Underneath hook-curl zone on the Cover 2 side. Plays with standard 5-under technique — drops to his zone, reads QB, walls crossers.
Hook zone in the middle. The MIKE has to be aware of the asymmetry — concepts coming from the Cover 2 side have different windows than concepts from the quarters side.
Underneath on the quarters side. With quarters over the top, the SAM has deep help inside and out — but he still only has 3-4 underneath defenders total, so floods can stress him.
Vulnerabilities
- !! Identifying the split exposes the scheme
- !! Cover 2 side: same post-wheel vulnerability
- !! Quarters side: seam routes between CB and FS
- ! Motion/shift to test the boundary
- ! Flood to the Cover 2 flat
Best Attacks
Use pre-snap motion to identify the split. Attack Cover 2 side with post-wheel or smash. Attack quarters side with verticals. Flood the seam on the boundary between the two coverages.
