The compressed alignment creates natural rub and pick opportunities that are devastating against man coverage. Defenders struggle to maintain assignments through the congestion at the release point, making bunch a go-to formation for red-zone and third-down situations. Kyle Shanahan engineered devastating bunch concepts in Atlanta with Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu. The tight alignment creates maximum disruption at the release point — man defenders physically collide with each other. The primary defensive counter is pattern-match quarters, which assigns defenders to routes rather than receivers.
