Glance

Quick skinny post off motion vs single high

quick-gamecover-3-beatermcvaymotion

Glance is a single-receiver Cover 3 killer designed to attack the deep-third cornerback on a quick post-up move at 8 to 10 yards. Typically run off pre-snap jet or shift motion that identifies the coverage and isolates the target receiver, the glance is thrown on rhythm before the safety can rotate over. The route works because the cornerback in Cover 3 has to honor the vertical stem, opening a window for the inside break. Sean McVay built large portions of the Rams passing game around this concept with Cooper Kupp.

Route Assignments

ZpostCore

Glance route — 8-yard stem then sharp inside break to about 12 yards. The primary throw on rhythm.

Yflat

Quick flat to pull the curl/flat defender outside and clear the window for the glance.

Hdrag

Backside drag underneath as a checkdown if the glance is covered.

Xgo

Backside go to occupy the deep-third corner and hold the safety.

Fcheck release

Check-releases to the strong-side flat as a safety valve after the run action.

Read Progression

Pre-snap motion reads the coverage. If the defender does not travel with motion, the coverage is zone and the glance is live. Throw on rhythm to the inside break, anticipating the cornerback playing the vertical.

Why It Works

In Cover 3, the boundary cornerback has the deep third and must honor the vertical stem. By breaking inside at 12 yards, the receiver works into the window between the cornerback and the curl-flat defender. The flat route on the same side pulls the curl-flat defender wide, opening the throwing lane.
