Cover 0

0 Deep, 6+ Man-to-Man

Cover 0 is an all-out pressure look with no deep safety help. Every defender is either in man coverage or rushing the passer. It's the most aggressive coverage a defense can call — high risk, high reward. If the rush gets home, it's a sack or turnover. If the QB gets the ball out, there's nobody behind the coverage.

Defender Responsibilities

CornerbackMan on #1

Locked in press-man on the #1 receiver to their side. No help over the top — must win at the line and stay in phase. If beaten, it's a touchdown.

CornerbackMan on #1

Same as the other CB. Press technique is critical. Must funnel inside to help from the LBs or funnel outside with no safety net.

Free SafetyBlitz / Man on TE/RB

No deep responsibility. Either blitzing or picking up a man assignment (TE or RB). In some Cover 0 looks, both safeties blitz.

Strong SafetyBlitz / Man on TE/RB

Same as FS. If the offense has 5 eligible receivers, both safeties may need to cover. If only 4, one can blitz.

Will LinebackerMan on RB / Blitz

Either blitzing or picking up the back out of the backfield man-to-man. Must be athletic enough to match a back in space.

Mike LinebackerMan on #3 / Blitz

Keys the #3 receiver (TE or slot). If no #3 releases, the MIKE can blitz or spy the QB. He's the conflict player.

Sam LinebackerMan on TE / Blitz

Responsible for the TE man-to-man if he releases, or blitzes if the TE stays in to block. Athletic mismatch is the concern.

Vulnerabilities

  • !! Any 1-on-1 mismatch
  • !! Quick slants & hot routes
  • !! Double moves
  • ! RB wheel/angle routes
  • ! No safety net — one miss = TD

Best Attacks

Quick game (slant-flat, snag), shot plays with max protection, double moves if you can buy time.
