3-4 One-Gap
Attack gaps, OLBs unleashed
The 3-4 One-Gap takes the 3-4 personnel and unleashes them as gap-penetrating attackers rather than two-gap readers. Each lineman is responsible for a single gap, firing upfield at the snap. The outside linebackers become the primary pass rushers, giving the defense four viable rush threats on every play. This aggressive approach trades gap discipline for disruption and backfield pressure.
Player Assignments
Penetrates the weak B-gap at the snap. Unlike two-gap, fires upfield to create disruption. Must get into the backfield and force the ball to bounce.
Shaded to one side of the center, attacking a single A-gap. More athletic and quicker than a two-gap nose, built for penetration rather than occupation.
Strong-side penetrator. Attacks the strong B-gap with the goal of disrupting the run and collapsing the pocket from the interior.
Primary weak-side pass rusher. Attacks the edge with speed-to-power moves. In this scheme, the OLBs are essentially stand-up defensive ends who generate the majority of sacks.
Strong-side edge rusher. Takes on the tight end or tackle with speed and power. Must be disciplined about contain on designed rollouts and boots.
Downhill run-stopper. With the DL penetrating, the MIKE must fill cutback lanes and clean up what the front creates. Also a frequent blitzer in this aggressive scheme.
Weak-side run fitter and coverage player. Must handle cutbacks from the penetrating DL and match backs in man coverage on passing downs.
Strengths
- • Generates tremendous backfield pressure without blitzing
- • OLBs as edge rushers create four-man rush with natural contain
- • Aggressive gap penetration disrupts run plays at or behind the line
- • Forces offenses to account for edge threats on every snap
Weaknesses
- • Penetration can create cutback lanes if linebackers are slow to fill
- • Vulnerable to trap and counter plays that exploit aggressive upfield charges
- • Requires elite edge-rushing OLBs, which are among the hardest players to find
- • Less sound against power run schemes than the two-gap variant
