Cover 3 Cloud

3 Deep, 4 Under (CB to Flat)

Cover 3 Cloud inverts the traditional CB-safety roles: the cornerback plays the flat using a squat/pattern-read technique, while the safety rotates to take the CB's deep third behind him. 'Cloud' means corner to the flat. The cloud corner aligns near the LOS, reads #2, and plays the flat aggressively — he is essentially a short-zone defender who can jam #1 and then settle on any flat route. The safety behind him now has the deep third. This is devastatingly effective against quick-game offenses, bubble screens, and teams that rely on short flat throws, because the CB is right there waiting.

Defender Responsibilities

CornerbackFlat (Cloud / Squat)

The cloud corner. Aligns at or near the LOS and reads #2. If #2 goes flat, the CB is right there. If #2 goes vertical, the CB sinks to the curl zone. Jams #1 before settling into his flat zone. 'Cloud' = corner to the flat. This inverts the normal CB role from deep defender to short-zone player.

CornerbackDeep Third (Right)

Standard Cover 3 deep third on the opposite side. Not playing cloud technique — bails at the snap and takes the deep right third. The defense typically only plays Cloud to one side at a time.

Free SafetyDeep Left Third (Rotated)

Rotates to take the deep left third that the cloud CB vacated. Must get to his landmark quickly — the cloud corner is in the flat, so the FS owns everything deep on that side. Reads the QB through #2 and breaks on the throw. This is a wider assignment than his standard deep middle role.

Strong SafetyDeep Middle Third

Rotates to the deep middle third, replacing the FS who moved to the cloud-side deep third. The SS must be comfortable playing centerfield. This rotation is why Cloud requires safeties who can play any deep role interchangeably.

Will LinebackerWeak Flat / Curl

Weak-side flat or curl zone. With the cloud CB handling the strong flat, the WILL takes the weak flat. Standard 4-under zone technique.

Mike LinebackerMiddle Hook

Anchors the middle hook zone. Reads the QB, walls crossers, and fills vs the run. Same responsibility as standard Cover 3.

Sam LinebackerStrong Curl / Hook

Strong-side curl or hook zone. With the cloud CB handling the strong flat, the SAM can sit in the curl zone and look for crossers coming from the backside.

Vulnerabilities

  • !! Deep throws behind the cloud CB
  • !! Vertical routes testing FS rotation speed
  • ! Seam routes between rotated thirds
  • ! Post-corner double moves vs the cloud CB
  • ! Run game away from the cloud side

Best Attacks

Deep routes behind the cloud corner before the FS can rotate, vertical shots testing the safety rotation, seam routes between the rotated thirds, and double moves that exploit the cloud CB sitting on short routes.
