Quarters MOD
4 Deep Pattern-Match (MOD Rules)
Quarters MOD adds pattern-matching rules to standard Cover 4 based on whether the middle of the field is 'open' or 'closed.' The safeties read #2 — if #2 goes vertical, the safety carries him man-to-man (the middle of the field is 'closed'). If #2 goes inside or short, the safety 'MODs' to help the CB bracket #1 (the middle is 'open' and the safety provides over-the-top help). This creates natural double-coverage on #1 whenever #2 is not a deep threat. MOD turns quarters from a passive four-deep zone into a reactive system that adjusts to the route distribution.
Defender Responsibilities
Keys #1 and plays his deep quarter. If #2 goes vertical and the safety carries him, the CB is solo on #1. If #2 goes short and the safety MODs to help, the CB has bracket help on #1. The CB plays more aggressively when he senses the safety coming over to help.
Mirror technique. Pattern-matches #1 with awareness of whether the safety behind him is carrying #2 or MODding to help. The CB's leverage and technique change based on the safety's read.
Reads #2 to his side. If #2 goes vertical, carries him man-to-man through his deep quarter — the middle is 'closed.' If #2 goes short or inside, MODs over to bracket #1 with the CB — the middle is 'open.' This read is the foundation of pattern-matching quarters.
Mirror of the FS. Reads #2 strong and applies MOD rules — carry vertical #2, or MOD to help on #1 if #2 goes short. The communication between the safety and CB on each side must be seamless for MOD to work.
Underneath zone or matches #3 weak. If #2 goes short and the safety MODs to #1, the WILL must handle #2 in the underneath zone or pass him off. The LBs clean up what the safeties do not take.
Anchors the middle hook zone. With only 3 underneath, the MIKE has a lot of ground to cover. Must handle crossers and be alert for #2 receivers who go inside after the safety MODs away.
Strong-side curl or matches #3 strong. If the SS carries #2 vertical, the SAM handles anything underneath on the strong side. Must rally to the flat if needed.
Vulnerabilities
- !! Deep middle seam when both safeties carry #2
- !! Only 3 underneath (floods stretch LBs)
- ! Quick game before MOD reads develop
- ! Crossing routes through the thin underneath
- ! Smash concept testing the MOD read
Best Attacks
Smash concept (corner + hitch) to test the MOD read, 4 verticals to force both safeties into carry mode and open the middle, flood concepts against only 3 underneath, and quick game before the reads develop.
